Day 25 – Pictou to Shubenacadie: Hills, Headwinds, Rain

Distance: 100km

Elevation: 687m

When I was having breakfast, Shannon and Marco were ready to hit the road. So we said farewell once more. The plan was to meet again in two days at the southern coast of Nova Scotia.

It was quite windy, temperatures had dropped by 10 degrees and it was supposed to rain in the afternoon.

Marco had described the province as follows “beautiful north shore (Bay of Fundy & Gulf is St. Laurent) and stunning south shore (Atlantic) with nothing in between but forests”. I was going to find out if that was true.

My spontaneous first impressions of Nova Scotia were:

  • Roads in bad condition and often w/o shoulder
  • People less friendly than in PEI (very tough to beat though)
  • Car drivers a little less careful

The morning was characterized by one big climb of 30km. Along the way, I picked up a cucumber from a hobby gardener who had too many. Very nice.

Around noon, I reached Truro, an industrious little town, and had lunch there.

Then it started to rain. I was determined to go on and clock some mileage since I have had a series of rather short days in PEI.

Around 15:00 hrs, I got too cold and started looking for a place.

I found a campsite 65km North of Halifax. The warden would let me set up my tent in a little shed next to the washroom that was really perfect given the weather.

I took a shower, washed my clothes and put them in the dryer. Then I cooked dinner. It took me a while to get warm again although I was wearing all layers that I had with me.

Unfortunately Marco has had a bad day and needed to rest. So most likely our reunion would not work out.

We would see how it goes. Despite the rain it had been another good day with some progress and the forecast for the next days looked promising.
