Distance: 900 km
I woke up to rain and clouds in my little hut, which was built from maple wood, and it made me happy – because I was not exposed to it.
For today, I wanted to see three lighthouses on the Bonavista Peninsula.
The first one was at Kings Cove just 30min away. I had breakfast in the car and loved how this was so Canadian.
When I arrived I found out that it needed a hike to actually see the lighthouse. Long story short, I ended up hiking over an hour in the rain.
At first I ran passed it because I was so focused on the path and ended up at an interesting geological formation.
I then finally found it on my way back. It was hilarious. I was probably the first person ever to miss a lighthouse.
The view from up top was beautiful, despite the rain. And I was the only person to be seen.
When I was back in the car, I was soak and wet. But the car had heating and a roof so no problem at all.
I drove on to the Bonavista Lighthouse which was 45 minutes away. This one was really easy to find and quite beautiful.
Allegedly, Giovani Caboto had first set foot on Newfoundland here back in 1497.
In Port Brexton, I stopped at Two Whales coffee shop for lunch. Again, a recommendation from my host Wade. They had good, healthy food which tasted super.
The last lighthouse was in Trinity Bay and it was tricky to reach via 4km of spectacularly hilly dirt road.
Overall, the roads were quite bad when you left the main highway but I was very ok with slow driving.
It was still pouring rain which added to the dramatic atmosphere. Also, a fog horn was informing ships about the shallows ahead.
The view out on the sea was stunning.
Around 3pm, I headed back to St. John’s which was 300km away.
I dropped off the car at the airport and was surprised that I had done over 1,800km in just two days.
I took a cab and was with my host at 6pm, ready for a farewell dinner.
We went out to a burger place some 10 minutes away. On the way. Wade met 5 people that he knew and that would chat him up. St. John’s is really small.
We had a nice evening and chatted a lot about other travels. Also, Wade was renovating his kitchen all by himself so he was also sharing his ideas for changes that he was going to do.
It had been a great two day road trip to explore the island. But now, I was really getting ready to go home.
