Day 17 – Lower Perth to Hawkshaw: Back in the Saddle, Rain, Autobahn

Distance: 121 km

Elevation: 905m

I had breakfast in my cabin and was in the saddle at 8:15. That was a good and early start. It had rained during the night but was dry now.

When I left the campground, I saw my very first living Skunk (Stinktier). So far, I only had seen them as roadkill.

Later, a family of Raccoons (WaschbƤr) crossed the road right in front of me and I saw a majestic Bald Eagle (Weisskopfseeadler).

Today seemed to be wildlife day.

So far, I had only seen a living deer, a blue snake and a perfectly red bird, most likely a red cardinal.

The road was beautiful and relatively flat. At Florenceville-Bristol I had an early lunch at a Subways.

In the afternoon, it started to rain and it did not stop again.

Since my navigation was impaired during the rain, I ended up on the equivalent of a German ā€œAutobahnā€. That was a little scary but actually not dangerous since the shoulder was broad enough. Also, nobody made a fuss and everyone tried to give me space.

Later I learned that cycling on a big highway was normal here in New Brunswick. Cyclists are not so well respected here and the infrastructure is not as good as say in Quebec. Interesting.

After about 120km I arrived at a nicely maintained campsite directly by the Long Reach river at Hawkshaw.

The place was run by a gay couple. They were from Toronto and had bought the place cheap in the middle of the Covid pandemic.

Everything was very neat and new. Also, they had a good taste.

What a difference to the campsite from the day before. However, they did not have a shed or anything comparable and were rather expensive.

I showered, washed my clothes while showering and put my wet clothes in the dryer before the rain finally stopped and I could set up my tent and make dinner.

At around 7pm it started to rain again and I called it a day.

It rained all night long and got pretty chilly. I was very thankful to be dry and warm in my little tent.
