About 30 years ago, two zis scholarships helped me to broaden my horizon, expand my understanding of what is possible, and develop more self-confidence. zis is a non-profit organization that has been awarding scholarships for study trips to young people between the ages of 16 and 20 for more than 60 years. Today, the word we use for tenacity and grit is resilience - and I've made it my profession, to help managers around the world to develop more of this inner power. In retrospect, the experiences I've had on these trips to Scotland and Iceland have been priceless for my development. After having had a childhood with some challenges, I learned that I could cycle 1,700km on my own and get wet every day without despairing. I have learned that I was able to get along with only 300 € for 4 weeks and still had a good time. I have learned what it's like to be threatened with deportation and how to get an interview with the President from such a crisis. I have understood that limitations are primarily constructs in our heads, and I want to make these insights available to as many adolescents as possible.

Da 32: Elsas to Toronto (by train)

I woke up to a mystical landscape passing by my window. It was made of water, stones, trees, and fog. Beautiful. Mystical landscape in the morning I had an early breakfast and from my place in the dome car I enjoyed the rising morning sun and how she painted the bypassing nature in warm colors. … Continue reading Da 32: Elsas to Toronto (by train) →

Day 31: Winnipeg to Elsas (by train)

This is really slow traveling and I like it. Despite the fact that the car was shaking and squeaking a lot when driving, I slept reasonably well. We reached Winnipeg around midnight. My father had been here during his time in the army for a NATO maneuver. He had always talked about how great his … Continue reading Day 31: Winnipeg to Elsas (by train) →

Day 30: Saskatoon to Winnipeg (by train)

The attendant at the Via Rail Station had given me a website yesterday to check on the whereabouts of my train. I had checked in the evening and also during the night and the delay of my train had been building up to about four hours. So, I took it easy and got up at … Continue reading Day 30: Saskatoon to Winnipeg (by train) →

Day 28: Kindersley to Delisle

Distance: 162 km Elevation: 275 m Date: August 29, 2022 I woke up at 8 AM. At first I had issues with the soft mattress but I eventually I slept well. After I caught up on messages, social media, and my blog, I enjoyed a “free” hotel breakfast. Not great but a welcome change. I … Continue reading Day 28: Kindersley to Delisle →
